RV Vacation Ideas for your Maine RV Vacation

The “Pine Tree State” of Maine is close enough for RV campers to consider a trip from our Boston(Sutton),MA location—just three short hours’ drive to Portland! That’s why we’ve pulled in a whole net full of Maine RV vacation details for you on this page. Your trip to this New England state will be one of your best RV camping jaunts ever, if you start here and then make the journey to Maine your own.

Maine RV Camping Destinations

State Flag of Maine

From lighthouses to horseracing, with every conceivable kind of outdoor recreation in between, you’ll love travelling in Maine by RV! This state’s rugged seashore will take your breath away and the timeless feel of its fishing villages will remind you what keeps America going. Follow the call of Maine’s world-famous museums or wander a windswept beach—you’ll find the perfect place to do it as you get to know this New England gem.

Acadia National ParkMaine National Parks

Acadia National Park, that craggy “ Downeast Maine” destination on Mount Desert Island, is a favorite with our RV rental customers. Nicely-planned campgrounds right on the Island make for easy access to all the National Park’s attractions.

Put on your hiking shoes when you enter this Park! More than one hundred miles of trails lead to mountain vistas, ocean shores or lush forestland, so be sure to bring along your camera. You’ll also find marvelous places to bike, boat, climb and ride horses, as well as locations for quieter pursuits like bird watching.

Maine State Parks

What you’ll find in the State Parks of Maine runs the gamut from lakeshore to remote mountain lookouts. Locations such as Sebago Lake State Park in the State’s southwest corner feature sunny beaches as well as forest hiking trails. On the other hand, Lily Bay State Park in the Maine Highlands Region offers rustic campsites near the deep, cold waters of Moosehead Lake (keep an eye out for the magnificent creatures that give the lake its name!)

From Camden Hills State Park on Penobscot Bay to wildlife-rich Mt. Blue State Park in Western Maine, motorhome campers will find so much to do they’ll wish they had more time! Use this link to learn more about the Maine State Park you’d like to visit first on your vacation.

Major Attractions and Events

We mentioned a moment ago that Maine is a cultural treasure. Here’s a list of the museums and attractions that celebrate the art, industry and history of the region:

1. Abbe (Native American Culture) Museum – Bar Harbor
2. Alfred Shaker Museum – Alfred
3. Maine Art Museum Trail (seven locations)
4. Maine State Museum – Augusta
5. Owl’s Head Transportation Museum – Owl’s Head
6. Portland Harbor Museum - Portland
7. Skyline Farm & Carriage Museum – North Yarmouth

Even more exciting spots to explore in Maine:

• Booth Bay Sea Dogs (minor league baseball) - Portland
• Colonial Pemaquid State Historic Site
• Maine Narrow Gauge Railroad & Museum - Portland
• Palace Playland Amusement Park – Old Orchard Beach
• Portland Head Light
• Bar Harbor Whale Watch – Bar Harbor

If the great outdoors is more your style, we should mention that whitewater rafting is huge in Maine! Rafters try their skills on the Kennebec, Penobscot and Dead Rivers, in particular. Here’s a link to North Country Rivers, just one of dozens of rafting outfitters in the state.

And don’t miss the chance to eat lobster and other seafood delicacies straight from the ocean while in Maine. Here’s a link to a special page prepared by the Maine Office of Tourism that highlights great seafood locations.
