There is plenty to do around Austin, so you should plan on staying in town and looking around. The SoCo District is a must-see and a big tourist attraction, especially on First Thursday where the area turns into one big block party with sales, specials in the restaurants and bars, and lots of fun and laughter. South Congress Avenue is most definitely a place to congregate.
In November, you can enjoy the Annual Austin Celtic Festival, which is the largest gathering of Celts in Central Texas. Music, dancing, animals and just plain fun! All year long you will discover some great performances with the Austin Symphony Orchestra, particularly during the Christmas holidays with a fabulous sing-a-long for the whole family.
Head on down to New Braunfels where you will quickly spot the German roots of this town. In the beginning of November you will want to go to Landa Park for the Wurstfest. Lots of celebrations and traditional foods! Head back to Austin and if you love football (who doesn’t?) you can catch some games at the Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium.
Landmarks and National Historic Sites near Austin, TX
Get a view of amazing late 19th Century architecture at the Texas State Capitol Building. It is on the National Register of Historic Places. Then head over to the Texas State Cemetery to see the burial places of many famous Texans.
Mount Bonnell is the place to go when you wish to see one of the landmarks in this Texas city, with great views. Another historical spot with some wonderful views is the University of Texas Tower, 307 feet tall with a lovely observation deck. Other places to put on your itinerary are the O. Henry Home & Museum, the French Legation Museum and the Treaty Oak, a tree estimated to be over 500 years old.
State Parks / Major Lakes, Rivers and Beaches
There is nothing quite as wonderful as exploring the out-of-doors and Austin’s nearby State Parks give you that opportunity. At McKinney Falls State Park you can ride paths on your mountain bike, picnic or fish. Plenty of wildlife to observe as well. In the summer you will find Onion Creek is a great place for swimming. Pedernales Falls State Park has a wide array of outdoor fun available, from picnicking and hiking to bird watching and fishing.
To the west of Austin, find Bastrop State Park where backpacking is a favorite pastime. You can experience the scenic drive from Bastrop over to Buescher State Park. South of Austin you can visit more of Texas State Parks by stopping by Lockhart State Park and Palmetto State Park where the San Marcos River runs.
Want to find some lakes around Austin? There are many! One of the favorites is Lake Austin on the Colorado River. You can fish here to your heart’s content. Plenty of water sports on Lake Travis, too – another favorite.
Local Attractions / Amusement and Theme Parks
Whether you have kids with you or not, you will want to visit the many nearby amusement parks. Six Flags Fiesta Texas is one place you have to go. You’ll have to travel a bit south to San Antonio to visit there, but there is also SeaWorld Adventure Park in the same city. At Sea World you can talk with the dolphins and enjoy the water shows.
In Austin, be sure to ride the rides and play the games at Kemah Boardwalk. It is open all year. And Kiddie Acres is the perfect park for those under ten. At Sandy Lake Amusement Park you’ll find rides, miniature golf, and the best of all, a miniature train ride.
