How Often Should You Service Your RV?

How Often Should You Service Your RV?

Just like any vehicle, your RV requires regular maintenance to keep it running smoothly. It is important to inspect your RV, make repairs, and service the engine at least once every 6 months. El Monte RV has compiled a checklist to guide you through the process. Check out our massive used RV inventory, or visit one of our seven RV dealerships to find the RV of your dreams!

Trailer Maintenance 101

If you prefer to leave it to the professionals, you can always bring your RV to a trailer service center for a tune up. Adjusting the brakes or checking faulty components will probably require some outside help. If you’d like to DIY, find your manufacturer’s service checklist, or if you can’t find your specific motorhome’s checklist, find one that has the same component parts. Below are the five primary concerns when it comes to RV maintenance.

Wheels

The first area of business is the wheels. Check the nuts and bolts and tighten to the indicated torque value every 3 months, or ideally before every long journey. Inspect the wheel for cracks, distortion, or dents in the metal. Every year, inspect, clean, and repack the wheel bearing and cups.

Tires

Tire inflation and pressure should be checked weekly, and the condition inspected every 3 months.

Brakes

The brakes are a complex and undeniably vital system. Some parts need to be checked yearly, others every six months, so it’s better to do a thorough investigation whenever you get the chance. Test that your brakes are operational at every use, and inspect the adjustment, magnets, linings, controller, cylinders, and lines frequently.

Seals

The body of your RV is constantly exposed to the elements, and can sometimes spring a leak. Check the seams of your roof, around the air vents, skylights, and AC so you can catch leaks before they cause extensive water damage. Fill them with a sealant that matches your roof material.

Breakaway System

Every time you use your RV, check the electrical connection between the trailer and tow vehicle. Ensure that the brake system and brake lights are responsive, check battery charge, and switch operation.
