The Best Camping in Colorado
There are so many terrific places to camp in The Centennial State that it is impossible to name just one. Therefore, consider these possibilities in each region of the state.
Regions
You can divide the state into eight regions, each with excellent camping opportunities.
Northwest
The northwest corner near Steamboat Springs is a fantastic camping area. Routt National Forest offers several campgrounds, and you can go off-roading, boating, fishing and hunting. Shadow Mountain National Recreation Area contains five major lakes. Other possibilities include Steamboat Lake and Pearl Lake state parks.

North and Denver
There are three reservable campgrounds at Rocky Mountain National Park, and this is a terrific place for hiking, fishing, scenic driving, picnicking and wildlife viewing at this location. Numerous state parks offer beautiful campgrounds, including Lory, Garden Gate and Eldorado Canyon. Those looking for a metropolitan vacation will love Denver campgrounds.
Summer RV Rental
East
The East region near Sterling offers exciting camping opportunities. North Sterling State Park has three campgrounds, and it is a terrific place to go birding. North Sterling Reservoir is an excellent place for all your water activities.
West
Black Canyon of the Garrison is a fantastic place for a camping adventure as there is a campground on each rim, and you can go hiking, biking and rock climbing. Nearby is Curecanti National Recreation Area, which is another fantastic place to go fishing as there are three large reservoirs, so book your stay at either of their campgrounds.
Summer travel in RV
Central
Located east of Gunnison, this area includes Arapaho and Gunnison national forests, which both contain many campgrounds.
Pikes Peak
This area includes South Fork, Colorado Springs and Pagosa Springs. Beaver Creek State Wildlife Area is a fantastic place to visit if you love bear, deer, dove, elk, rabbit and turkey hunting. There is also great cold stream fishing. While there are no campgrounds in the wildlife area, three nearby campgrounds in Rio Grande National Forest are fantastic places to camp. Pikes Peak is on many people’s bucket lists, and you will love exploring Colorado Springs.
Southwest
This area near Durango is a terrific place to go camping. Mesa Verde National Park offers amazing insights into when Native Americans roamed the state, and it has a 267 site campground. Part of San Juan National Forest lies in this region, and it offers terrific camping and hiking.
Southeast
This region near Alamosa is home to Alamosa National Wildlife Refuge, where officials have spotted over 200 bird species. There are many terrific campgrounds in Alamosa. Lathrop State Park contains a nine-hole golf course, and you will love playing on Martin Lake.
