One-Tank Trips

One-Tank Trips

From Los Angeles, you can drive on a tank of gas (or two) to many very picturesque destinations. Los Angeles is the heart of southern California, from movie studios, to the Hollywood Walk of Fame, from the infamous Hearst Castle, to the Hollywood Bowl. Here are just a few places a bit out of LA we would recommend for your one-tank trip.

1)  Disneyland! Disneyland is probably the oldest and best-known amusement park, located in Anaheim, California, which opened in 1955. It is the only one designed and built under the direct supervision of Walt Disney. Walt Disney came up with the concept of Disneyland after visiting various amusement parks with his own daughters in the 1930s and 1940s.

2) The Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks: Often referred to as the Land of Giants, describing the giant Sequoia Trees from these National Parks, they are open year-round and host many scenic drives to view wilderness and wildlife. These parks are located only about 4 1/2 hours from LA. Not only that, but there are caves to explore and rock climbing, skiing and snowshoeing in the winter. Enjoy your sightseeing right from the comfort of your RV and find a park campsite to stay in overnight.

3) River Rafting on the Verde River: In addition to canoeing and kayaking river rafting is highly recommended and not that far from LA (about a 9-hour drive). One of Arizona's only federally designated Wild and Scenic Rivers, the Verde River springs from the ground in the rural community of Paulden, southwest of Flagstaff. It meanders southeastward 195 miles through private, federal, state and tribal lands before reaching its confluence with the Salt River near Phoenix. You can take a side trip from LA to get here and stop at Joshua Tree National Park along the way; making your next stop at Kofa National Wildlife Refuge, both along I-10, which makes for easy driving.

National Parks / National Historic Sites near Los Angeles

National Parks / National Historic Sites near Los Angeles

There is nothing to compare to a scenic drive in an El Monte RV motorhome through the Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks, less than 5 hours northeast of Los Angeles, as mentioned above. In addition, east of Los Angeles is Joshua Tree National Park, mostly a desert park with much to offer outdoor enthusiasts. Numerous other parks abound in California including the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area, right in LA’s backyard.

You will love getting out into the beautiful environment awaiting you in Southern California.

Other national parks close to Los Angeles include: Death Valley, Channel Islands National Park, Yosemite, and Pointe Reyes National Seashore, among others. Take your time and enjoy what southern California has to offer.

National Forests near Los Angeles

The Angeles National Forest and the Los Angeles River are mountainous national forest areas covering 700,000-acres with chaparral, pine & fir trees & hiking trails. The Angeles National Forest of the U.S. Forest Service is located in the San Gabriel Mountains and Sierra Pelona Mountains. It is located just about 45 minutes away from Los Angeles.

Also, the Los Padres National Forest is situated in the beautiful coastal mountains of central California and spans over 200 miles, north of Los Angeles. It includes most of the mountainous lands from Ventura to Monterey and extends inland. Elevations can be as high as 8,847 feet.

State Parks near Los Angeles

  • Southern California is home to many glorious state parks just waiting to be explored. Since it’s always a good time of year to get outside and do some wandering, here are just a few state parks in Southern California that are worthy of a full day, or even a whole weekend, of exploration. See this link for all of the CA State Parks. Those near LA include:
  • Cuyamaca State Park. ...
  • Malibu Creek State Park. ...
  • El Capitan Beach State Park. ...
  • Bolsa Chica Beach State Park. ...

Local Attractions / Amusement and Theme Parks

Local Attractions / Amusement and Theme Parks

In addition to Disneyland, in Anaheim, mentioned above, there are many other places to visit in the Los Angeles area. Go to Legoland in Carlsbad or head over to Six Flags Magic Mountain in Valencia. Knotts Berry Farm in Buena Park offers a very different amusement and theme park, and now have added a hotel and water park to the mix. This is a great way to spend the day and is quite lovely with a sort of throwback to the way California used to be.

During the summer months, many of our El Monte RV rental customers head to the Hurricane Harbor Water Park to cool off. Another fun place to go is the Hollywood Wax Museum.

You’ll most likely agree there can be no better way to see all the sights and experience the thrills than by getting and staying there in your El Monte RV motorhome.
